Mumbai Gets A Spot In The Spiderverse, Everything We Know About Indian Spiderman

The makers of Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse recently dropped a clip from the film introducing the Indian Spiderman who will be making an appearance in the Sony animated film. Voiced by Karan Soni the character, Spiderman aka Pavitr Prabhakar lives on Earth - 50101 in a city called Mumbattan. The city looks like Mumbai filled with traffic, local trains, and vendors on the side of the road, giving desi fans the home vibe.

While not much is known about the character, fans were happy to see Pavtir make the same point Desi people have been trying to make for years. There is no such thing as chai tea. The scene features in the clip shows, Pavtir talking to Peter for Earth 616 and having tea. When Peter tells him he loves chai-tea, Pavitr losses his cool, and exclaims, "What did you say? Chai tea? Chai means tea, you are just saying tea-tea."

The moment from the clip has won everyone's hearts and fans have been looking forward to the upcoming movie. Take a look at the clip and its Twitter reactions:

Who is Pavitr Prabhakar?

As you wait for the film's release, here are some details about the character revealed by the fandom. According to reports, Pavitr Prabhakar has a very eventful life, even before becoming Spider-man. He used to live in a small village but moved to Mumbai with his aunt and uncle after getting half a scholarship. He was often bullied at school but managed to make one friend, Meera Jain.

His Powers?

Pavitr got his powers in a desi style from an ancient yogi while he was running away from his bullies and reportedly came across a yogi who granted him the powers of a spider to fight the evil threatening the world. He also lost his uncle in a similar way to Peter Parker of Earth 616. After refusing to help a woman being threatened, he discovers that his uncle attempts to help her and is stabbed to death.

His First Villain?

His first villain is Nalin Oberoi, a local crimelord who performs an ancient ritual to call demons from the other world and manages to fuse with one. He then makes it his mission to call more but has to face Spider-man. The interesting thing about Pavitr's journey is he encounters some of the biggest villains of the spider-verse all at once.

Apart from Nalin Oberoi he also encounters an Indian variant of Doctor Octopus, who was created by Oberoi with a demon. Doctor Octopus of Earth - 50101 also has similar hands but is made of demon-like material. Meanwhile, while fighting Nalin Oberoi, Pavitr encounters, the demon-like being himself, similar to Vemon. On refusing to bond with it, he manages to sever the link between the two worlds and saves his Earth.

Who would he save Meera or his Aunty?

Unlike Peter of the MCU who couldn't save his uncle or his aunt, Pavitr had a different plan. But he was put into a similar situation to The Amazing Spider-man's Peter. While fighting Oberoi, the crimelord kidnaped Pavitr's aunt and love interest Meera. When both are put in harm's way, as they fall from a height, Pavitr saves his aunt but Meera is saved by Doctor Octopus.

Fans have been excited to watch the film on the big screen but there has been some criticism of the Indian Spiderman. Some fans pointed out how Pavtir's voice was not up to the mark. While some called it nasal, others said it seemed to have a typical accent. The character has been voiced by Karn Soni who plays the role of Dopinder in Deadpool, which also has stereotypical traits for a desi character.

Pavitr Prabhakar has a fun and exciting vibe to it, but the feature remains if he will end up being another character used to grab the attention of an audience from a different market.

Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse, backed by Sony is set to release on June 2, 2023.
